Human Subjects Protection Training ![]()
In accordance with NIH requirements, the University of Indianapolis IRB
requires education on the protection of human research participants for
all investigators submitting protocols for review (regardless of funding
source). This education may also be required for research team members depending
on their involvement with the project.
Policy on Medical Emergencies and Accidents Incurred by Individuals Participating in University of Indianapolis Research Projects on
Campus ![]()
This policy outlines how medical emergencies and accidents
incurred during the course of research projects on campus should be
addressed.
Research Protocol Review Procedures ![]()
The timeframe for completing an IRB Review is approximately two weeks (excluding
University of Indianapolis holidays). Protocols submitted for full review
are due to the IRB Office two weeks prior to the scheduled monthly IRB Committee Meeting.
The PI may submit protocols for exempt/expedited review to the IRB Office at any time during regular business hours with the understanding that the IRB Chair has the authority to change the level of review initially determined by the PI.
University of Indianapolis Students as Research Participants ![]()
The purpose of this policy statement is to communicate strategies for minimizing
"student risk" associated with participation (as research subjects)
in faculty-sponsored research. The recommended strategies are derived from
key principles described in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 45, Part
46 - Protection of Human Subjects, Section 46.111 Criteria for IRB approval
of research
Use of Professional Research Methods in the Classroom Setting ![]()
In some courses students collect data by using professional research methods,
even though the students' work is not expected to contribute to generalizeable
knowledge. When student use of research methods in courses involves no more
than minimal risk, the UIndy faculty member assumes the primary responsibility
for assuring that the rights and welfare of all human participants are protected.
Classroom activities that fall under this policy are not subject to a mandatory
IRB review.
